Trope:
The reading of the Torah is done by the use of TROPE which is a set of special markings that indicate the correct pronunciation, accent, and melody to be applied to each word of the Torah. The Torah scroll is hand written upon parchment where the letters appear without vowels, or Trope markings. Therefore; in order to read from the Torah scroll one must memorize the vowels and Trope markings. The learning of Torah reading is done from a book called TIKUN where the text appears both with vowels and Trope, as well as without vowels and Trope.

Who should study Torah reading
..........................

Haftara reading
Reading of the Haftara does not require reading from a parchment scroll and can be read from a book having vowels and Trope markings printed with the text. Therefore it is much easier to learn the reading of the Haftara as it does not necessitate memorization.

Hebrew knowlege:
Students having a Torah observant background and who are fluent in the Hebrew language, if they intend to learn an entire Torah portion, they should start learning at least six months before the date of their Bar Mitzva. In the case that these students intend to learn only the Haftara, they should start learning at least three months before the date of their Bar Mitzva. Frequency of the lessons should be at least once every week, with self study and practice every day for at least one half an hour. Students who are not fluent in the Hebrew language must allow for more time to prepare for their Torah or Haftara reading.

Teaching online:
The student and teacher can see and hear each other during the lesson through the use of a Video Chat program. The text to be studied can also be placed onto the computer screen. In addition, an audio recording can be downloaded for the purpose of self study and practice between lessons.

Advantages of this method:
1. The lesson takes place at the convenience of ones own home with the use of a personal computer while connected to the internet.
2. There is no need to purchase any complicated software and the only hardware that is needed is a simple internet camera and a microphone.
3. The software that is used during the lesson for audio and video communication is one that can be downloaded from the internet at no cost.
4. There are no additional charges accept for the cost of the lesson itself.
